CONCEPTUALIZED TYPEFACE “FAMILY”
“In 2020, we weren’t able to be in direct contact with one another but we could scream into the void of the digital ether; to desperately try and connect through the chaos.”

I made a typeface from my dad’s handwriting found in old letters he wrote me while in the military. He wrote to me almost every day during the Fall of 1995, I kept these letters close as one of the single most transpicuous examples of my dad’s vulnerability and willingness to connect with me...even to this day.

Behind The Process ✷
I looked through old journals, notebooks, classwork, and miscellaneous materials to gather writing from my mom, two younger brothers, ex-boyfriend, and my brother's girlfriend at the time to create typefaces that fully symbolize each person. Then used that as a basis for creating a poster series to discuss different family dynamics. This project is a celebration of hand-drawn letterforms, language, and physical artifacts.

Design Outcome ✷
Prioritizing closeness and vulnerability counters the issue of proximity in our culture. In 2020, we weren't able to be in direct contact with one another but we could scream into the void of the digital ether; to desperately try and connect through the chaos.
